Rahayu

Rahayu shows such determination to lead an independent life despite the challenges she faces from her visual impairments.

Her tenacity is evident in her adeptness at scaling trees in search of wild fruits, showcasing her impressive foraging skills. While she often navigates the island alone, her solitary nature doesn't hinder her ability to engage with her fellow orangutans. Rahayu effortlessly integrates herself into social circles, showing a gentle attitude that fosters solidarity among her peers. However, beneath her gentle exterior lies a streak of assertiveness, marking her as a dominant figure among the orangutans of Setrum Island. Fearlessly, Rahayu competes for food, displaying a remarkable level of courage even when faced with larger competitors. Yet, in moments of thwarted attempts, a fleeting glimpse of disappointment crosses her face, underscoring her sensitivity to setbacks.

As night falls, Rahayu's sleeping habits reveal a pattern of adaptability. While she lacks a constant favourite resting spot, she demonstrates a desire for constructing sophisticated nests for repose. Often returning to these nests, she meticulously refurbishes them, weaving together leaves and branches to fashion comfortable shelters. In the face of changes to her environment, such as the relocation of feeding platforms by caretakers, Rahayu responds with resilience, promptly crafting new nests nearby, ensuring her privileged access to the food. To enrich the lives of Rahayu and her fellow orangutans at Setrum island, the Animal Management team diligently provides daily stimuli. Recently, the enrichment most provided were hollowed-out banana and papaya trees filled with seeds and leaves generously filled with honey. Burlap sacks bursting with a bounty of fruit and seeds, meticulously sewn shut, were also provided as engaging entertainments to foster mental and physical stimulation for the orangutans as they progress through their 'high school' curriculum.

Thank you so much for supporting Rahayu on her rehabilitation journey.
