Help secure a critical area of lowland orangutan habitat in Sumatra. This area is so important for orangutan conservation. You see, it’s home to one of the three largest populations of Critically Endangered orangutans.
Over 80% of Critically Endangered orangutans live in unprotected forests. This means their forest homes are not safe from destruction. Right now, they are at risk of extinction because their forest habitat can so easily be converted to mining, palm oil, pulp paper and other unsustainable forms of agriculture.
Together with our project partner Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL), we have identified an area of 4,634 hectares (11,473 acres) of critical rainforest habitat - part of the Gunung Leuser Ecosystem - that urgently needs protection.
Due to strategic and political sensitivities we cannot publicly tell you exactly where this land is located as it will jeopardise our ability to purchase this land at fair market prices.
What we can tell you is that this lowland rainforest habitat is of significant conservation value, not only as it contains one of the densest populations of Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans, but that it is also a significant carbon sink for mitigating climate change.
Our goal is to buy back strategic allotments from individual landowners to restore and protect this critical ecosystem for orangutan conservation. To do this we will need to raise $3 million over the next five years.

Our method of securing land for conservation has already been successful in other areas thanks to the support of donors like you. So far we have legally protected 1.2 million acres, providing ongoing protection for 4,500 wild orangutans.
It is only by legally purchasing, leasing and managing key rainforest areas, and bringing them under permanent protection, that we can secure a future for orangutans and other endangered species.
